Embodied Coaching
The coaching support I offer blends guided techniques with touch, movement and somatic awareness to create a bespoke safe space for listening to the wisdom of the body, where change is possible. It’s not about fixing anything broken, but an embodied process for identifying and releasing the inauthentic, to reclaim original purpose and the full self.
PRINCIPLE 1
Keeping Touch at the Center
Most self-improvement and coaching approaches rely upon thoughtful engagement, with the thinking mind. Through blogs/books/videos/one-on-one support, we work to adopt new ways of perceiving, deciding, moving, living… in short, to change. Significant change is often met with fierce resistance, as our ego rejects the unfamiliar.
(I believe) we’re best able to express who we are and fulfill our purpose when we not only believe change is safe—in the mind—but also experience a felt sense of safety—in the body. Touch adds depth and dimension to what may otherwise only be seen and heard.
I call this place of security—sensed in the mind and experienced in the body—'homebase.’ From homebase, we may orchestrate bold, enduring changes. From here, we can also invite awareness and meaning to sensations we might otherwise ignore or rush to resolve.
PRINCIPLE 2
Reclaiming the Authentic
(I believe) we each have a unique purpose to fulfill, gifted with innate qualities of the self, perfectly matched to our purpose.
Over time, many of us—craving permission, security, validation, status, access or simply out of necessity or survival—abandon original purpose for other pursuits and adopt roles in conflict with who we really are.
Neglect of true self and purpose often manifests as physical, emotional and existential distress, underpinned by feelings of disconnection.
From the safety of homebase, we can reach behind the rehearsed narratives and facades to restore the original, freeing us to step up and into our full potential.
Differences Between Embodied Coaching and Massage Therapy
Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is broadly defined in the US as the manipulation of soft tissue in the interests of health and good physical condition, with touch being one among many mechanisms. Clients often seek massage therapy for purposes of relaxation, pleasure, and relief of muscle tension or soreness. While massage therapy routinely includes some essential exchange of questions and answers, discussion is typically brief, though clients are encouraged to communicate freely throughout.
Embodied Coaching
I primarily utilize touch in coaching sessions to create a felt experience of safety in the body, in support of coaching-related objectives around life changes. Touch is also utilized for heightening awareness of persistent and emerging sensations, for the purpose of inviting meaning through the coaching components. Continuous discussion is foundational to ensure alignment between somatic and coaching aspects of most sessions.
