Encore Touch - Embodied Coaching

Embodied Coaching

Embodied coaching blends established coaching approaches with touch, movement and somatic awareness to create a bespoke safe space for change and listening to the wisdom of the body. It's not about fixing anything broken, but a process for releasing the inauthentic to reclaim original purpose and the true self.

Principle 1

Reclaiming the Authentic

(I believe) each of us is here to fulfill a unique purpose, gifted with innate qualities of the self, perfectly matched to purpose.

Over time, many of us—craving permission, security, validation, status, access—abandon original purpose for more illustrious pursuits, in turn adopting roles in conflict with our true nature. Societal pressures often further shape our decisions, particularly at the intersection of toxic masculinity and homophobia.

Betrayal of self and purpose often manifests as physical, emotional and existential distress, underpinned by feelings of disconnection.

Coaching approaches can help to reach behind the rehearsed narratives to restore the original, freeing us to release the facades and step into our full potential.

Principle 2

Keeping Touch as the Center

Most coaching approaches rely upon thoughtful engagement, with our thinking mind. We consume others' advice—blogs, books, videos, one-on-one instruction—to adopt new ways of perceiving, deciding, moving, living… in short, to change.

Prospects of significant change are often met with fierce resistance, as our ego armors up against all things unfamiliar. Techniques for "quieting the mind" are thus essential and thankfully abundant.

(I believe) we're better able to express our truth when we not only believe change is safe—cognitively—but also experience a felt-sense of safety—in the body. Human contact adds depth and dimension to what may otherwise only be seen and heard.

As we begin to trust embodied experiences of safety to change, even a resistant psyche can follow. I call this place of trust—sensed by the brain and experienced in the body—'homebase.' From homebase, we can orchestrate bold, enduring changes.

Homebase is also a space to learn the language of the body. Instead of rushing to end discomforts—tension, pain, unease—bodywork can instead heighten awareness of these (and others) to invite meaning. The body provides a map to the authentic, revealing where we have veered off course.

Differences Between Embodied Coaching and Massage Therapy

The touch provided in coaching sessions is distinctly different from the touch of massage therapy in a number of ways:

Intention

Touch in coaching sessions is for heightening awareness persistent and emerging bodily sensations to invite meaning, in contrast to massage therapy where touch is intended to rapidly resolve symptoms.

Purpose

Touch is merely one component of a coaching session and provided early to create a felt-safety in the body, in contrast to massage therapy where touch is often for pleasure and relaxation, as well as alleviating pain and tension.

Communication

We'll have a conversation throughout the bodywork portion of the session, as well as before and after, to ensure a mutual and continuous understanding of the unfolding process, in comparison to a focus on feedback and brevity in most massage.
